Brent Sauls is an African Gaffer with nearly two decades of experience across features, series, and premium commercial work. Classically trained, he has worked every role in the lighting department — from trainee, spark, and best boy to Gaffer on Main Unit, Rigging, 2nd Unit, and VFX Unit — building a deep, lived understanding of both the craft and the crews behind it, a lighting technician shaped by the full spectrum of the discipline.
He built his foundation on features such as Dredd 3D, Death Race 2, and Safe House, learning under seasoned lighting teams and absorbing the pace and discipline of international filmmaking. By 2014, he gaffered his first feature, Tiger House, establishing the path that would define his career.
As he continued leading smaller units, Brent broadened his craft as a technician on larger-scale features including Star Trek: Beyond, The Mummy, and Mowgli. Through this progression, Brent’s path led him to Gaffer African Queens, a project that earned a 2023 Emmy nomination for Best Cinematography.
He has grown through every major evolution in lighting — from tungsten to LED, from analogue dimmers to wireless control, and into modern Virtual Production environments. He has worked across multiple African countries, as well as Dubai and Nepal, adapting his craft to diverse crews, conditions, and storytelling traditions. His work blends technical fluency with creative responsiveness, supporting cinematographers with mood, structure, efficient workflow, reliability, and calm under pressure.
In commercial work, he is trusted by leading global brands across automotive, fashion, luxury, lifestyle, and technology — bringing speed, precision, and adaptable problem-solving to agency-driven environments.
